Excavations of Roman city of Itálica

During a walk through the excavations of Itálica you will get a good impression of what this city 'Colonia Aelia Augusta Italicensium' once looked like with the amphitheatre (25,000 spectators), aquaducts, temples, thermal baths and houses with beautiful mosaic floors. It was the first Roman city in Spain, founded in 206 B.C. The name Itálica was derived from Italy, the country where both the founder General Publio Cornelio Escipión and the first inhabitants came from. The decline of the city probably started in the third century, because the Guadalquivir River changed its course. Itálica was also the birthplace of the Roman emperor Trajan; the Triana district was also named after him.

A large part of the Roman city has not yet been excavated. The oldest part is still hidden under the village of Santiponce. Many finds of Itálica are preserved in the archaeological museum of Seville and in the palace of Condesa de Lebrija. During your city trip in Seville this could be a nice day trip, because the Roman ruins of Itálica are quite well preserved.
